    Point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy in segregation-free Mg_{1-x}Al_{x}B_2 single crystals up to x=0.32

    We present new results of point-contact Andreev-reflection (PCAR) spectroscopy in single-phase Mg_{1-x}Al_{x}B_{2} single crystals with x up to 0.32. Fitting the conductance curves of our point contacts with the two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model allowed us to extract the gap amplitudes Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi}. The gap values agree rather well with other PCAR results in Al-doped crystals and polycrystals up to x=0.2 reported in literature, and extend them to higher Al contents. In the low-doping regime, however, we observed an increase in the small gap Delta_{pi} on increasing x (or decreasing the local critical temperature of the junctions, T_{c}^{A}) which is not as clearly found in other samples. On further decreasing T_{c}^{A} below 30 K, both the gaps decrease and, up to the highest doping level x=0.32 and down to T_{c}^{A}= 12 K, no gap merging is observed. A detailed analysis of the data within the two-band Eliashberg theory shows that this gap trend can be explained as being mainly due to the band filling and to an increase in the interband scattering which is necessary to account for the increase in Delta_{pi} at low Al contents (x < 0.1). We suggest to interpret the following decrease of Delta_{pi} for T_{c}^{A} < 30 K as being governed by the onset of inhomogeneity and disorder in the Al distribution that partly mask the intrinsic effects of doping and is not taken into account in standard theoretical approaches.Comment: 22 pages, 9 eps figures, Elsevier style.     We report the results of the first directional point-contact measurements in Mg(B_{1-x}C_{x})_2 single crystals with 0.047 <= x <= 0.132. The two-gap superconductivity typical of MgB_2 persists up to x=0.105. In this region, the values of the gaps Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi} were determined by fitting the Andreev-reflection conductance curves with a two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model, and confirmed by the single-band BTK fit of the sigma- and pi-band conductances, separated by means of a magnetic field. At x=0.132, when T_{c}=19 K, we clearly observed for the first time the merging of the two gaps into one of amplitude Delta~3 meV.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. The order parameters Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi} were obtained by fitting the conductance curves with the two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model. Both Delta_{pi} and Delta_{sigma} decrease with the critical temperature of the junctions T_c^A, but remain clearly distinct up to the highest Mn content.     Language Technologies (LT), together with their backbone, Language Resources (LR), provide an essential support to the challenge of Multilingualism and ICT of the future. The main task of language technologies is to bridge language barriers and to help creating a new environment where information flows smoothly across frontiers and languages, no matter the country, and the language, of origin. To achieve this goal, all players involved need to act as a community able to join forces on a set of shared priorities. However, until now the field of Language Resources and Technology has long suffered from an excess of individuality and fragmentation, with a lack of coherence concerning the priorities for the field, the direction to move, not to mention a common timeframe. The context encountered by the FLaReNet project was thus represented by an active field needing a coherence that can only be given by sharing common priorities and endeavours. FLaReNet has contributed to the creation of this coherence by gathering a wide community of experts and making them participate in the definition of an exhaustive set of recommendations

    Detection of specific antibodies against toscana virus among blood donors in northeastern Italy and correlation with sand fly abundance in 2014

    Toscana virus (TOSV) is a Phlebovirus transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies and is an important etiological agent of summer meningitis in the Mediterranean basin. Since TOSV infection is often asymptomatic, we evaluated the seroprevalence in blood donors (BDs) in the Bologna and Ferrara provinces (Northeastern Italy)\u2014the areas with the highest and lowest numbers of TOSV neuroinvasive cases in the region, respectively. A total of 1208 serum samples from BDs were collected in April\u2013June 2014 and evaluated for the presence of specific TOSV-IgG by ELISA. The IgG-reactive samples were confirmed by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IIF) and by microneutralization test (MN). Serum samples were defined as positive for anti-TOSV IgG when reactive by ELISA and by at least one second-level test; TOSV seroprevalence was 6.8% in the Bologna province, while no circulation of TOSV was detected in the Ferrara province. Sand fly abundance in 2014 was also estimated by a geographic information system using a generalized linear model applied to a series of explanatory variables. TOSV seroprevalence rate was strongly associated with the sand fly abundance index in each municipality, pointing out the strong association between sand fly abundance and human exposure to TOSV

    A cooled telescope has been designed and prepared for measurements of both local and cosmological Near InfraRed Backgrounds in the waveband 1–5 mm at balloon altitude (40 km). The detection system consists of a linear array with 32 InSb pixels placed in the focal plane of the telescope, cryogenically cooled and thermally controlled. A short description is given of the main characteristics of the instrument and of the expected performances. The experiment, repeatedly tested in laboratory, flew in the 1995 summer from Palestine (Texas, USA)
